Domain Names

First Steps

To enable us to load, manage and host your website and email on our servers there are a few small steps you need to undertake first. We will assist you wherever possible in this process however as you are the owner of the domain we do not have the authority to request changes and this must normally come from you unless you have given written authorisation to your registration company that we can act as your agents.

These steps are straightforward and should normally only take a few minutes to do. When you have completed them let us know and we can set up your website and email on our servers.

Registering and Setting Up a Domain Name

We can register and maintain domain names at a cost of £25+vat per annum, however we usually recommend that you register your own domain name using one of the online registration companies such as www.ukreg.com or www.123-reg.co.uk. Registering it yourself will ensure that you retain complete legal and administrative control of your domain name.

Try to keep your domain name simple and snappy so that others can remember it. Generally .com or .co.uk is best. Using .co.uk helps to tell the World that you are a UK based company and may help to stop unwanted emails/calls from abroad. Both the above registration companies provide a facility to search for available domain names.

Once you have successfully registered your domain name "The Internet" needs to know where your website is physically located. Think of this as a postal address or postcode. All of the ISPs and other services on the Web need to be informed where it is so that customers typing in your domain will be directed to your website. In order to achieve this something called the "Name Servers" need to be set up. Don't worry too much about what this actually means, your registration company will understand. You simply need to instruct them to set up the Nameservers as follows:

Primary DNS: ns1.turbodns.co.uk

Secondary DNS: ns2.turbodns.co.uk

If you registered your domain online this can usually be done within a control panel supplied on the website. Simply log on to your control panel and look for the Domain maintenance section and there should be an option to modify the name server settings. If you cannot find the option you should be able to email support at your registration company's address and request the change. Most online services (such as those suggested above) will give you the option to set up the domain at point of sale. Simply select the option to "host elsewhere" and enter the information shown in bold above into the boxes provided.

If you registered a .co.uk domain directly through Nominet or if you have a dispute that you need settling on a UK domain you may need to phone them. They usually require proof of ownership and/or some written/faxed authorisation before proceeding with any change. Nominet can be contacted on the following numbers:

Tel: 01865 332211

Fax: 01865 332288

Alternatively, if you'd like us to purchase a domain name on your behalf, please contact us on 0844 8042997 and select 1 for General Enquiries.

Setting up your Email

As part of our hosting service we provide full, unlimited POP3 email. By default we set up a single "catch-all" account which means that any email sent to an address at your domain gets sent to a single mailbox for collection (e.g. fred@yourdomain.com, sales@yourdomain.com etc. will all go to a single account). If you wish to have individual email boxes set up for particular members of staff please let up know and we will set up specific email accounts.

If you are transferring your email from another hosting service you should create a new email account and delete the old one around 1 week after the new service goes live. This will ensure that no emails are lost during the propagation to the new service.

The following instructions enable you to set up the main "catch all" email account on the two most common email systems (MS Outlook XP and Outlook Express). The instructions for other mail programs are usually very similar however please contact us if you need help setting it up:
